Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014 – Part I

An Introduction and New York part 1

Zippers imitate boning on Hervé Leger’s waistcincher

Once again I am attempting to do something that I have never successfully done – look at every collection that walks the runways in the next three week plus marathon of fashion called fashion week. Well at least all the looks that are presented on Style.com, arguably the best free source for high quality images from these biannual events. I have tried before, but inevitably I fall behind and end up checking out only the designers who have caught my attention before or that are generating the most buzz. This is particularly disappointing as New York, who traditionally leads off fashion week, I find to be the most utilitarian of shows and least innovative.

Carolina Herrera’s gown mirrored corset shaping in both form and her use of print.

First a bit of a disclaimer, for those of you looking for a comprehensive look into Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014 I would suggest that you continue your search. Rather this is just a smattering of what catches my attention, particularly as a corset and lingerie designer. I’ll be looking for textures, colors, patterns, and even interesting silhouettes that might one day find it’s way into a Copper Lune design. Sometimes I just find it fun to imagine what kind of lingerie I would design for a particular piece of outerwear. And of course I am always on the look out for designs that have been influenced by corsets.

Gary Graham came to my attention with how he modernised Medieval fashion elements. I’ll be watching for more from him.

So check back here often for some possibly random and hopefully entertaining looks at what is walking the catwalks in the next few weeks. Here are my impressions of the first half of Fashion Week New York. Note I’m already a few days behind in my quest.

Zac_Posen-fashion_week_ss2013

Zac Posen’s silhouette’s were strongly influenced by the Victorian Era as seen in this boned bodice gown.

And again in this copper red Zac Posen gown. Love the colour and the silhouette.

Speaking of copper, loved so much of Donna Karan’s color story

Thom_Browne-fashion_week_ss2013

Thom Browne is one of the few designers who has tried to pick up the mantle vacated by Alexander McQueen. His experimentation with volume and textures is always an inspiration.
